The Uplands

This 1937 home in the Berkeley Hills was transformed by opening up the kitchen/dining area to create a great atrium where the client could “cook and entertain simultaneously.” Once the kitchen tile was selected, the challenge was to create offshoot rooms and an outdoor space that was both cohesive and singular in mood, color and pattern story. Salvaging original elements such as the copper fireplace and ceiling beams allowed us to introduce modern conveniences (such as a dog bath!) without losing the home's unique sense of history. We transformed the en suite downstairs on a limited budget, using ‘only paint’ to re-face outdated wood kitchen cabinets with a bright red color that immediately made the space new again. Other than custom sofas and tiles, the art, furniture and lighting fixtures were largely sourced from auctions, flea markets and curtains from IKEA.
